Jaffa

The city of Jaffa - once the port city on the mediterranean for Jerusalem.

Today I decided to walk to Jaffa (or Joppa) which is on the edge of Tel Aviv. I'm staying in North Tel Aviv and the walk was a bit of a challenge in the 43 degree celcius heat wave.

Jaffa is the city where Tabitha, was raised from the dead by Peter (Acts 9:36-43).

The Shuk Ha-Carmel on the road to Jaffa.

On the way to Jaffa I walked through the Shuk Ha-Carmel (or the Carmel Market). Unlike the souk in Jerusalem, this shuk had items with clear price tags and minimal haggling.

Jaffa - a mixture of Israeli and Arabic cultures.

I spent most of the day walking and got a feel for the layout of the city, but I have to admit that it was a bit too hot and humid for my taste.

Entering Jaffa.

One observation I made was the lack of English being spoken and the lack of English on signs. In Jerusalem most signs were in Hebrew, Arabic and English - but here everything is in Hebrew. I found myself doing a lot of pointing at items - most people do, however, speak English. It is the first place this summer where I've felt a bit lost with the lack of language skills.
